In terms of policical parties, if I'm Republican and Christian or if I'm Democrat
and Christian or if I am Socialist and Christian or if I am Libertarian
and Christian or if I am Independent and Christian -- which would be
right? The "and Christian" would be right because that's the most
(only) important part. John 18:36 (ESV)
Jesus answered, "My kingdom is not of this world. If my kingdom were
of this world, my servants would have been fighting, that I might not
be delivered over to the Jews. But my kingdom is not from the world."
Is it possible to have a Christian country without Christians? Or, can
we make Christianity a governing body, when Salvation is an act of the
Heart (Romans 10:10)?
Some would argue that we should get back to America's roots. "Let's take America back", you may have heard mainstream Christians cheer during election periods. Just when was the Christian Golden Age for America? Was it when the early Americans slaughtered millions of Native Americans and took their land, placing the Native Americans on reservations? Or was it when we enslaved thousands of African-Americans and persecuted them for hundreds of years? Was there ever a Golden Age for the "Christian America" in America's history? Where did the idea come from?
Another issue that arises is "linking" America to Christianity. For example, actions taken by American are attributed to Christians. So, other countries that do not know about true Christianity accept American behavior as Christian behavior. To say America behaves as God intends is a fallacy and gives an unfair presentation of Christians and of God's people.
We must remember, since the fall of Adam, the Devil is the god of this world until the Kingdom of God is established on Earth.
Luke 4:5, 6 (ESV)
And the devil took him up and showed him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time, and said to him, "To you I will give all this authority and their
glory, for it has been delivered to me, and I give it to whom I will."
2 Corinthians 4:4 (ESV)
In their case the god of this world has blinded the minds of the
unbelievers, to keep them from seeing the light of the gospel of the
glory of Christ, who is the image of God.
While it is possible to have a great governing body with Godly servants in office, we must have a healthy suspicion around any of our governing bodies, because of the adversary and his control of this world.
What should we endeavor to do? 1 Timothy 2:1-4 (ESV):
First of all, then, I urge that supplications, prayers, intercessions,
and thanksgivings be made for all people, for kings and all who are in
high positions, that we may lead a peaceful and quiet life, godly and
dignified in every way. This is good, and it is pleasing in the sight
of God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to
the knowledge of the truth.
What if we were a country of Christians of the Heart by choice? Each Christian has a chance to change history by praying for all people, kings, presidents, governors, mayors and speaking the wonderful Gospel of Christ to build Christians of the Heart.
